Derek and I would Like to THANK each one of You. You put your faith in us week after week to provide food for yourself and your precious families. And we both worked very hard to accomplish this together. Picking, Packing the boxes, and loading them in the Van was joyous and very nerve racking and sometimes a bit crazy!!! Many days we were surprised with the harvest that we were able to provide. Some weeks we were hoping for something different. We know many weeks this season seemed to be repetitive, which did not provide pleasure to us, but we were thankful that we had this crop available. Many week I sheepishly dropped the boxes off feeling that it was insignificant. And a few Weeks I knew I would be Greeted will a warm smile. We know that each box and each season is different so we are always wondering if we’ve provided you with the fixin for a fine meal or if you opened the box and were quickly running to the market.
Our “spring” was no normal spring…. More like an extended winter if you ask me. With the frequent snows and freezes what is a farmer (in my case Farmer’s wife) to do??? We feel we did the best we could under the circumstances. Brutal snowS, late hard freezes, lots of rain and mud. I frequent remember praying for it to dry up, Warmth, and Sunshine. (Perhaps I may regret this request this summer as it is turning out to be very warm and I have very fair skin).
We truly feel that Our CSA venture has provided us with the most rewarding experience. Our CSA has allowed Derek and I to work together as a team, taught our young children and our selves more life lessons than I could count, taught us just a bit more about perseverance, and has strengthened our Faith. Derek and I never thought the CSA would provide the opportunity of growth on all the levels it has. Honestly, Derek only did the CSA to shut me (the nagging wife) up. He started the CSA with NO expectations. He along with many others, just knew it would not work here. As I recall there are numerous fellow farmers, professors, family members, and friends who thought (and still think) We were crazy! The responses has been nothing short than Amazing. I have created new friendships, formed business relationships, have been provided the opportunity to give back, and have been educated in lots of New and interesting ways of life that I appreciate each and every day. And Of course I am VERY excited because it was MY idea to take our farm in this direction. 🙂
The Thanks that I receive from you week after week, the emails, the FB post, and hand written notes are so appreciated and cherished. They mean so much more from each of you than anyone that we meet at the markets. Possible because we have a relationship with you and we know that you understand. We know most of you are in it for the long haul. We know that you want the same things we do. You want to be able to provide your family with Healthy foods. You don’t want the “other” stuff. Perhaps you have the right to complain but you don’t. I appreciate that, and I also appreciate the few complaint that I have received. The reinforcement you give, provides us with the motivation that we need. Just when we think maybe the CSA is too much work for us…. we get the encouragement that we need to keep going. Doing everything is no easy task. There have been many sacrifices and lots of sleepless nights, as is part of self-employment. Derek has literally started most seeds on the kitchen table and cared for the plant from seed to harvest. Yes, it is his job. Yes, it is his passion. Yes, it is what he wants to do but it doesn’t make it easy when you rely on “other” elements to “help” also.
We hope you understand that each season will provide more growth and changes. We are currently planting peach trees, and many more fruit trees. He is working on high tunnels to provide different things in the fall. He is always looking for something else to grow and open to any suggestions. We are scanning the magazines for something different to put in the box. I spend my late nights on pinterest, scanning the internet when I should be sleeping. Our work each season will be perfected over time and NO season will be alike. Each season we will continue to save to buy the equipment that we need to make it better.
Many of you have joined because you love us and want to support our dream. Most because you wanted local, fresh veggies, and it was easier than the grocery store. Some because you wanted to support local and not a big box store or corporate food chain. You don’t want your veggies traveling across the world to get to you. We are honored. We believe in all these reasons. Each season it becomes a little more tangible. We believe in the Dream and we will continue to do it each week. We tell ourselves each day that is not supposed to be easy but it is worth it. Each day I wish it wasn’t ‘easy’, but just a little less hard lol. Our farm is here because this is Derek’s passion. It is all part of the Big Plan, where we are supposed to be. All of our circumstances over the last 8 years have guided us to this day. Everything has fallen into place. We sell vegetables.
We are humbled and very grateful that you have chosen to support our farm. Cut out the middle man. Support a family business. To help a Farm Survive.
I have NO idea what the next season will bring. I am pretty darn sure there will be some crazy weather as we all saw last season. Maybe a drought, But we have irrigation this year, so NO more Rain dance. 🙂 I am sure there will not be enough hour in the day to plant, harvest, or complete everything that needs to be done. The deer, raccoons, or bugs may feel the need to snack on a few crops like last season. Our secondhand tractors will breaks or flat tire will occur. But We Will wake up each morning in a place where we are safe, able to work, and able to provide for our family and for others. We are blessed to be farmers in this world. I am certain each year will provide us with a new farming experience. We hope you are able to share all the seasons and share all of these wonderful experiences with us. If you are not, we again thank you for your support and wish you the very best. Maybe we will cross paths again at the markets.
Many Blessings ~ KACIE
