A Frost in South Louisiana? Yes, the prediction on 11-12-13 is there will be a frost tonight.
Well, No big deal right. I have learned that in farm life a frost can be a “Big Deal”.
In the spring we had a frost once our tomato plants were in the ground, we spend hours covering them with Styrofoam cups and agribon.
Today, I came home from CSA box delivery to a friend (fellow farmer) in my very unorganized attic looking for agribon row cover. LOL. This frost maybe a big deal!
Once we found the agribon, it was off to harvesting what was left in the back yard before dark. Luckily, I had my two favorite helpers ( Dalton age 7 and Maycee Age 2). Harvesting with these two is pure entertainment and a bit chaos. Dalton the “MASTER” farmer frequently instructs Maycee on proper harvesting techniques and when and what to pick. I spend more time listening to Dalton’s instructions (and cracking up) than I do picking. Thankfully we are at home and their attention span is not long for picking. Once they were inside I successfully harvested all the green eggplant, bell peppers, and a few tomatoes. I am secretly happy about the frost because I am ready for some new greenery/ scenery in the back yard.
As far as the 30 acres, we should be ok. We may lose a few crops (okra, squash) but thankfully we have mostly have cold crops planted now.
